Nice picture right? One way's right, one way's wrong. Seems pretty clear until you get to the bottom and see that it's a loop. So, which way do you choose if both options will get you there?
BYU's basketball team has been in the news lately because they suspended one of their star players when he broke the school's honor code. Hearing the media's reaction has me thinking about choices.
Hearing the news reporters talk about the school's too-strict honor code and continuously ask whether they will let him off of his suspension as to not hurt their chances at the final four just baffles me. I can't believe the society we live in places more value on him as a basketball player than they do as a young man trying to grow into an honest, respectable person. Are their blinders really so narrow that they can't see there's so much more to this player's life than this year's basketball record? I'm so glad BYU has the integrity to see their rules through and to help their student athlete, and everyone else, see that with choices come consequences. It doesn't matter who you are, or how good you are at something.
To take it just a little further, I'm so thankful that the LDS church is set up this way. The 'rules' we have may seem strict to outsiders, but that's really not what matters. What matters is that no one is making us follow them. They are a personal choice, and it is up to each person to accept the good and bad consequences for their choices. It's not ok to take the wrong path and think that you are going to end up at the same place as everyone else, without having to deal with the repercussions. Knowing that there will be consequences to our actions is a valuable lesson that our society too often lets fall by the wayside.

It has been really interesting to hear people's insight out here. Yes, he is not allowed to play but the beauty of it is the school didn't just say you can't play basketball, but they are also lending a helping hand to this young man and get him back on track. I think this is something the world doesn't understand. Sure there are consequences but there is a plan in place to help you get back to where we need to be. We shouldn't just go around messing up but if we do there is a way back. That is something I am grateful for.
